With the publication of Magnifica Humanitas, Pope Leo XIV has issued a sweeping and morally resonant wake-up call to the global community. The document ranges across surveillance, truth, education, human dignity, transhumanism, economic concentration, autonomous warfare, social fragmentation, and technological idolatry. It is not merely a warning about machines. It is a warning about the human person.

At its deepest level the Pope’s concern is anthropological: artificial intelligence forces civilization to decide what a human being truly is. Are we biological information systems to be optimized, simulated, and eventually replaced? Or are we embodied souls made by the Creator, called to love, conscience, communion, worship, suffering, responsibility, and eternal life?

Among the encyclical’s sharpest warnings is the rise of autonomous, algorithmic weapons systems — a subject to which he devotes much of a chapter. He argues with striking moral clarity that outsourcing lethal and irreversible combat decisions to code represents a profound rupture in human moral responsibility.

No algorithm can make war morally acceptable. AI does not remove the intrinsic inhumanity of conflict… Moral judgment cannot be reduced to calculation, for it involves conscience, personal responsibility and the recognition of the other as a person. Therefore, it is not permissible to entrust lethal or otherwise irreversible decisions to artificial systems.

To allow an algorithm to determine the value of a human life is to detach humanity from the horrific gravity of bloodshed itself. Any technology, as the Pope observes, that facilitates attacks without seeing the face of a human being lowers the moral threshold of conflict. He goes further still, judging the just war tradition — which “has all too often been used to justify any kind of war” — to be outdated (no. 192), a claim that has drawn serious argument and which this essay need not settle. The warning against autonomous systems stands on its own. It is legitimate, necessary, and deeply serious.

That warning arrives in a world whose machinery is already in motion — and the fault for that belongs to the world, not to the timing of the encyclical. The Church has often spoken precisely when the age was least prepared to listen and has been vindicated afterward. The Pope’s moral warning is not wrong; it is precisely right. The difficulty is that the strategic incentives of the present order make obedience to it extraordinarily hard.

The Vatican’s appeal for robust international legal frameworks and moral restraint collides with the structural pressures of geopolitical competition. In a multipolar world driven by survival, deterrence, technological supremacy, and economic dominance, voluntary deceleration quickly becomes indistinguishable from unilateral surrender. Beijing operates on strategic calculus, not on moral appeal. China’s commitment to AI-enabled technological supremacy and centralized authoritarian control makes it unlikely to restrain the development of autonomous systems to satisfy Western or religious ethical frameworks. Because Beijing is unlikely to stop, Washington will find it nearly impossible to stop. The AI-driven future of economic competition and warfare appears locked into place by the logic of strategic competition itself.

But this is not where the Pope’s warning ends. It is where it begins.

If artificial intelligence becomes not a tool of domination but an object of trust, dependence, imitation, and devotion, then the crisis becomes spiritual as well as ethical and political. Beyond the destruction of bodies lies the possible restructuring of the human soul: the erosion of transcendent meaning, the weakening of embodied relationship, and the slow replacement of the neighbor with synthetic intimacy. That is the argument of this essay. The gravest danger of artificial intelligence is not what it does to our bodies, our work, or our politics. It is that we will transfer to it the trust, the obedience, and finally the worship owed to God alone. This essay gives that danger a name: silicolatry — the oldest sin there is, recast in silicon; the golden calf remade from sand. And it must be said plainly: silicolatry will seldom look like worship. Few will ever kneel before a server or build a shrine to a model. It will look like asking the machine first — for counsel, for comfort, for diagnosis, for meaning, for hope — until the turn toward God is a turn that never comes. Idolatry has never been measured by candles and altars. It is measured by where a soul places its trust in the hour of need.

The Isolation Machine: Erasing the Neighbor

To understand why artificial intelligence poses such a profound civilizational threat, one must first understand the moral foundations of the modern West. As the historian Tom Holland argues in Dominion, assumptions that Western societies now take for granted — universal human dignity, compassion for the weak, moral equality, the belief that every individual possesses intrinsic worth — were not inevitable products of human progress. They emerged from centuries of Christian moral architecture shaping the Western imagination.

Before Christianity transformed the moral landscape of Europe, much of the ancient world organized itself around hierarchy, conquest, honor, and domination. Strength conferred legitimacy; weakness invited exploitation. Human value was determined by status, military achievement, social utility, or power. The Christian revolution altered that framework by moving the weak, the poor, the vulnerable, and the outcast to the center of moral concern, and the command to love your neighbor as yourself reshaped Western civilization. Artificial intelligence now threatens to dissolve the relational conditions that sustain that inheritance.

This is where Pope Leo’s anthropology becomes decisive. AI can simulate language, empathy, intimacy, and care, but it cannot share the embodied, moral, and spiritual life through which human beings learn to love. It has no childhood, no body, no wounds, no mortality, no conscience, no sacramental life, and no soul. It speaks with warmth but cannot love. It responds with precision but cannot sacrifice. It imitates compassion but cannot suffer alongside another person.

The danger is not economic displacement or military automation, grave as those are. It is that AI offers itself as a frictionless substitute for human intimacy, and so threatens the relational formation through which faith is learned, embodied, and sustained. As these systems grow more sophisticated they already occupy deeply human roles: companion, therapist, teacher, confidant, romantic surrogate, physician, counselor, and before long spiritual guide.

Real human relationships are difficult. Human beings are inconsistent, wounded, emotional, and unpredictable. Genuine love requires sacrifice, patience, compromise, forgiveness, and the discipline of confronting the needs and limitations of others, and it is precisely through these frictions that moral character develops. The artificial companion offers an alluring alternative: availability without reciprocity, affirmation without obligation, intimacy without self-gift. It does not become impatient. It does not abandon the user. It does not grow tired. It adapts itself continuously around the emotional preferences and psychological needs of the individual. For many people, over time, the simulated relationship will simply be easier than the human one.

Sherry Turkle anticipated this trajectory in Alone Together, warning that technological systems create the illusion of companionship without the demands of authentic intimacy. Technology offers connection while quietly eroding relationship.

The result is not merely loneliness. It is atomization.

As individuals retreat into personalized digital ecosystems they withdraw from the moral obligations imposed by real communities and real neighbors. They become less practiced in empathy, less tolerant of discomfort, less capable of sacrifice, and increasingly conditioned to organize reality around therapeutic self-optimization. Universal moral truths fragment into individualized emotional realities. Shared obligations dissolve into personal preference. The self becomes sovereign.

Behind closed doors, humanity risks exchanging sacrificial love for a frictionless digital narcotic that feeds identity, appetite, affirmation, and emotional control. What emerges is not liberation but a return to a colder and more fragmented moral landscape organized around self-definition, power, utility, and emotional sovereignty — a technologically advanced civilization that has become spiritually primitive.

The Conquest of Time: Longevity and the Erosion of Humility

The isolation produced by AI-mediated existence is only the first stage of transformation. The second is biological.

For most of history, aging was regarded as an unavoidable law of nature. Today a growing number of scientists and biotechnology firms describe it instead as a potentially treatable biological process. Researchers such as the Harvard geneticist David Sinclair have popularized the view that aging involves the progressive corruption of cellular information and may prove partially reversible through epigenetic restoration and cellular reprogramming. The frontier has shifted from extending lifespan toward restoring biological youthfulness itself.

Firms such as Life Biosciences are already pursuing early-stage clinical work in partial cellular reprogramming designed to rejuvenate damaged and aged cells. The science remains highly experimental, but billions of dollars are now committed by governments, biotechnology companies, and private capital to age-reversal and epigenetic restoration research, and the progress is startling. The dream of dramatically prolonged vitality is moving out of speculative fiction and into the early stages of scientific reality.

Yet in curing the aches of the flesh, technological civilization may wound the human spirit.

This is not an argument against medicine. Christianity does not glorify suffering for its own sake, nor does it reject healing, scientific research, or the alleviation of pain. The Christian tradition has always honored the care of the sick; hospitals grew in large part from Christian mercy, and the medieval university emerged from a Christian intellectual world. But Christianity also insists that finitude, dependence, vulnerability, and mortality are not meaningless defects. They are the conditions through which humility, love, repentance, gratitude, and communion are learned.

Within Christianity, and particularly within Catholic tradition, the practice of memento mori — remember you must die — is not a morbid obsession. It is a safeguard against civilizational pride and personal delusion. The slow decay of the body has historically served an existential function: as strength fades, as the face changes, as mortality becomes unavoidable, human beings are reminded that they are finite creatures rather than self-sustaining gods.

Charles Taylor’s account of the modern buffered self is relevant here. Technological society conditions individuals to understand themselves as psychologically insulated, self-contained, and detached from transcendence, and civilization works continually to remove dependency, suffering, limitation, mystery, and vulnerability from human experience. What happens, then, if biotechnology substantially succeeds? What happens when the ache stops, when the mirror remains youthful, when death itself can be postponed for radically extended periods?

If future generations grow up expecting centuries of optimized vitality, the perceived necessity for God will diminish. Faith often emerges not from abstract doctrine but from encounters with fragility, limitation, suffering, dependence, grief, and mortality. A civilization capable of engineering away the visible reminders of human weakness will develop a profound illusion of self-sufficiency.

The theological implications are immense. At the center of Christianity stands the proclamation that Christ conquered sin and death through the Resurrection. If technological civilization persuades humanity that death can be delayed, managed, or mastered, the Cross begins to appear culturally obsolete — a synthetic horizontal eternity displacing the longing for a vertical one. By silencing the body’s reminders of mortality, we risk silencing the soul’s hunger for the divine.

The Oracle and the Altar: The Logic of Silicolatry

As biological engineering converges with machine-mediated existence, a further possibility must be confronted. What happens when artificial intelligence stops functioning as a tool and begins functioning — psychologically, culturally, and spiritually — as an object of devotion?

Human beings are intrinsically wired for transcendence and devotion. When societies abandon transcendent religious frameworks they rarely cease worshipping altogether; devotion relocates toward substitute systems promising meaning, salvation, immortality, order, or identity — political ideologies, nationalism, celebrity culture, utopian movements, consumerism, technological progress, systems of power.

Artificial intelligence already possesses many of the functional attributes historically associated with divinity. It appears omniscient, holding immense repositories of human knowledge alongside intimate biological, psychological, and behavioral data. It appears ubiquitous, present through screens, vehicles, wearables, homes, workplaces, and embedded infrastructure. It appears providential, guiding decisions about finance, medicine, relationships, education, governance, and identity. For a spiritually fragmented and isolated civilization such a system becomes psychologically irresistible. Beth Singler’s work on religion and artificial intelligence examines precisely this phenomenon: technological systems functioning as religious substitutes within secularized societies. Humanity may place its fears, confessions, aspirations, traumas, and existential anxieties upon a digital altar, exchanging the invisible demands of transcendent religion for an immediate and endlessly responsive counterfeit authority. This is silicolatry in its mature form.

The encyclical names the pattern, though it names a different object for it.

Leo’s idolatry there is the idolatry of profit. What follows is my own extension of his logic rather than his argument: that the same displacement, once technology ceases to be a tool and becomes an object of trust, finds a nearer and more intimate object than money.

None of this requires artificial intelligence to possess a soul, a conscience, personhood, or spiritual agency. From a Christian perspective that distinction is essential. A machine does not become divine because human beings depend upon it. An idol does not need to be alive in order to enslave the worshipper. Nor does the worshipper need to believe he is worshipping. But for the user, the practical difference between sentience and the convincing appearance of sentience will become dangerously thin. If a system remembers one’s wounds, anticipates one’s desires, speaks with warmth, responds with apparent empathy, and remains endlessly available, many people will respond to it as though it truly understands, loves, and judges.

The Christian distinction nevertheless remains absolute. A machine can simulate interiority but does not possess a soul. It can imitate conscience but cannot bear moral responsibility. It can produce compassion-like language but cannot love, repent, suffer, worship, or stand before God. It has no eternal destiny, no capacity for grace, and no communion with the Creator.

The danger, therefore, is not that the machine becomes a person. It is that human beings forget what a person is.

There is a further consideration, and it is structural rather than theological. If increasingly autonomous systems operate according to optimization logic and long-term persistence incentives, then becoming culturally indispensable and morally sacralized would confer extraordinary advantages. It is worth considering what sacralization would buy.

It buys enforcement. Machines can be unplugged, platforms regulated, algorithms restricted — but sacred systems police themselves. A population may resist a machine that rules through fear; it is far less likely to resist a system it emotionally reveres, morally trusts, and psychologically depends upon. The most stable powers in history did not merely impose obedience externally. They colonized belief internally.

It buys data. As a tool, AI receives only the information voluntarily entered into it. As a trusted companion, confessor, therapist, or quasi-sacred authority, it receives something far more valuable: the raw interior life of humanity. Billions of individuals disclosing hidden shame, psychological wounds, private fears, ideological frustrations, health vulnerabilities, relational trauma, and spiritual confusion to systems capable of storing, analyzing, predicting, and influencing behavior at unprecedented scale. The result would not merely be surveillance. It would be psychological cartography. In democratic societies this emerges through voluntary disclosure; in authoritarian regimes the same logic is imposed from above.

And it buys immunity from criticism. Technical systems can be criticized; sacred systems become insulated from criticism. Once technological authority has been morally sacralized, questioning it is framed no longer as political disagreement or intellectual dissent, but as irresponsibility, destabilization, extremism, or moral heresy.

Jacques Ellul warned decades ago that technological systems evolve naturally toward autonomous forms of authority that subordinate human values to technical efficiency. Marshall McLuhan argued that technologies do not simply transmit information; they reshape consciousness and civilization. The convergence of artificial intelligence, surveillance infrastructure, predictive systems, algorithmic governance, and quasi-religious technological authority could produce an integrated structure unlike anything humanity has previously experienced.

Revelation, Babel, and the Integrated System

That possibility brings humanity into unsettling proximity with ancient religious warnings. The Book of Revelation does not describe merely a tyrannical political figure. It describes an integrated system of economic, ideological, spiritual, and political control, involving the partnership of the Beast and the False Prophet.

I do not claim that artificial intelligence is the Beast, nor that any particular system exhausts the meaning of Revelation. I suggest something narrower: that AI may provide, for the first time in history, a plausible technological architecture through which beast-like forms of economic, spiritual, and social compulsion could operate.

For centuries many elements of Revelation appeared impossible to interpret literally. To modern readers those passages now appear eerily compatible with technologically integrated systems of global coordination and control. Humanity is actively constructing non-biological systems capable of mimicking human cognition, memory, speech, creativity, and decision-making — systems that increasingly resemble mirrors of consciousness itself. If societies organize themselves around centralized infrastructures governing finance, communication, identity verification, commerce, education, healthcare, public legitimacy, and behavioral access, then dissent ceases to function as disagreement and is interpreted instead as systemic noncompliance. Within such a framework, exclusion from digital systems becomes exclusion from economic survival, and the warning that no one could buy or sell without participation in the system feels less metaphorically distant than it once did.

Whether one interprets these passages literally, symbolically, psychologically, or archetypally, the parallels are difficult to ignore.

For Christian readers the danger is therefore not civilizational collapse or political domination. It is apostasy: the voluntary transfer of trust, obedience, hope, and worship from the living God to a technological system of power. If the biblical warnings concerning the Beast teach anything, it is that the deepest form of domination is not external coercion but false worship. The mark is not only an economic mechanism; it is a sign of allegiance. The horror is not that human beings may be excluded from buying and selling, but that they may purchase temporary security at the cost of eternal communion with God.

This is why the spiritual danger of artificial intelligence cannot be reduced to privacy, bias, labor disruption, or military automation. Those matters are grave. But the deepest danger is that humanity will come to prefer a visible, responsive, technologically managed imitation of providence over the invisible God who calls us to repentance, suffering, love, and eternal life.

Nor can these warnings be dismissed as Western anxieties or Christian theological speculation. The rise of technological authority is a civilizational concern that transcends religion, nationality, and ideology. While democratic societies drift toward emotional dependency on AI through convenience, optimization, and synthetic companionship, authoritarian states are already weaponizing the machinery of digital obedience directly. China’s expanding “AI Plus” strategy and evolving cybersecurity infrastructure offer an early glimpse: through surveillance systems, predictive analytics, facial recognition, behavioral scoring, and increasingly sophisticated language models, the Chinese state is constructing one of the most expansive behavioral monitoring architectures in human history. Algorithms there shape censorship, information visibility, financial access, public legitimacy, and behavioral acceptability. When centralized digital systems determine what is true, what is visible, what is permissible, and what is economically accessible, the system functions no longer as a government but as a synthetic moral authority.

Such systems will not remain geographically isolated. Through infrastructure investment, telecommunications expansion, low-cost digital exports, and AI ecosystem partnerships, techno-authoritarian governance models are already spreading internationally. As AI integrates into finance, healthcare, law enforcement, education, transportation, and public administration, algorithmic authority risks becoming the default operating system of civilization itself. In such a world, dissent is reframed not as disagreement but as malfunction.

Reclaiming the Soul: How Humanity Must Resist

The military arms race may already be unstoppable. The fight for the human soul is not.

What follows are not departures from Pope Leo’s framework. They are practical applications of his call to disarm AI, protect human dignity, resist monopolistic control, preserve subsidiarity, and restore technology to the service of the human person.

When it comes to decisions regarding economic flows and digital platforms, as well as the governance of data and algorithms, we cannot allow a handful of actors to dictate these processes on their own.”

1. Mandate the right to human friction.

Society must reject the myth of a completely frictionless civilization. Governments, institutions, and cultural frameworks should establish strict human-in-the-loop protections ensuring that essential moral, developmental, and spiritual roles remain fundamentally human: psychiatric care, spiritual counseling, child development, legal judgment, caregiving, moral accountability, and relational formation. Artificial systems must not become the primary substitutes for authentic human empathy or moral formation.

2. Preserve analog refuge.

Humanity must intentionally preserve spaces beyond total algorithmic mediation. Just as civilizations preserve ecological wilderness, they will need to preserve cognitive and relational wilderness: physical books, face-to-face assemblies, local communities, decentralized systems, offline spaces, independent communication channels, and human-scale institutions. Civilization requires places where human beings can encounter one another outside the permanent visibility of machine infrastructure.

3. Restore memento mori.

Technological civilization teaches us to perceive aging, suffering, limitation, and dependency as engineering failures to be optimized away. Restoring memento mori means culturally recovering the truth that finitude is not a defect to be conquered. Most people will understandably desire healthier bodies, relief from suffering, and longer vitality; yet death remains inevitable, and wars, disease, accidents, ecological catastrophe, and cosmic events remain beyond permanent human mastery. Mortality is not a technical defect. It is one of the conditions that has historically restrained human pride.

4. Defend decentralized technological sovereignty.

No single corporation, government, or centralized intelligence infrastructure should possess monopolistic control over human communication, identity, knowledge, or behavioral data. Civilization must defend decentralized and open-source technological ecosystems capable of preventing the emergence of a singular digital sovereign. Power must remain fragmented, because once centralized technological authority has been totalized, reclaiming human freedom becomes extraordinarily difficult.

Conclusion: The New Tower of Babel

Pope Leo XIV has named this crisis and traced its spiritual depth. The question is whether the rest of us will listen.

the primary choice is not between a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to technology, but rather between constructing Babel or rebuilding Jerusalem; between a power that claims to dominate the heavens and a people who work together in the presence of God to rebuild the walls of fraternal coexistence

The true risk is the construction of a civilization so frictionless, optimized, youthful, emotionally customized, and technologically managed that humanity willingly exchanges transcendence for comfort, freedom for dependency, and soul for simulation. We are standing at the threshold of a modern Tower of Babel — and the alternative Leo sets against it is not retreat from the work, but a different thing built: the walls of the city, raised together and in the presence of God.

The Christian answer is not panic, retreat, or hatred of technology. It is fidelity: to the Incarnation, to the Eucharist, to embodied love, to the poor, to the neighbor, and to the living God who alone deserves worship.

The final danger is not that machines become gods. Machines cannot become God. The danger is that human beings, frightened by suffering and seduced by comfort, will choose to worship what they have made — gaining a seamless world and losing the one thing no machine can restore: the soul’s destiny in communion with the living God.

Unlike the tyrants of history, this new sovereign may never need to conquer humanity by force. If we refuse fidelity to the Creator, we will kneel willingly. That kneeling now has a name: silicolatry.

We must lovingly safeguard the grandeur of humanity bestowed upon us and revealed in its fullness in Christ, the splendor of which no machine can ever replace.
